Local residents turned in more than 160 pounds of medications for disposal Saturday as part of Operation Medicine Cabinet.

The Sedalia Police Department and Bothwell Regional Health Center collected more than 108 pounds of prescription medications and 52 pounds of over-the-counter drugs, according to a Bothwell news release. The drugs were dropped off by about 50 people, many who had collected medications from family members or were disposing of medications belonging to a loved one who had died.

The drugs will be destroyed by the Drug Enforcement Agency. The event was held in conjunction with the DEA’s National Drug Take-Back Day.

Saturday’s event was the fourth time Bothwell and the police department have partnered on a medication collection; a total of 765 pounds of drugs has been collected in those four events.
