Postal workers collect tons of food

Letter carriers here collected 14,800 pounds of food to benefit pantries at Open Door and Salvation Army.

Branch No. 139 of the National Association of Letter Carriers, which includes Sedalia, Clinton and Knob Noster, collected 19,500 pounds in a food drive last weekend, said organizer and Sedalia letter carrier Priscilla McCabe.

Volunteers in Clinton picked up 4,200 pounds and those in Knob Noster collected 500 pounds.

Sedalia volunteers fell short of their 20,000 pound goal, but “We did pretty good,” McCabe said.

“Considering gas is $3.59 and all the other things going on, Sedalia is just a wonderful town for supporting people and organizations,” McCabe said.

Last year, Sedalians donated about 12,000 pounds.

The local NALC chapter is competing with similar-sized branches across the country to collect the most food. The winning chapter will receive

1,000 pounds of soup from Campbell’s. The contest closes May 28.
