A variety of events are scheduled on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, to honor the service of area veterans.
Beginning at 9 a.m., veterans are invited to Smith Cotton High School for a free breakfast in their honor, Tony Gallagher, commander of the 40 & 8 veterans organization said. Veterans are asked to make a reservation by Nov. 9 by calling 851-5317.
Following the breakfast, veterans will be honored in the school’s gym with a Veterans Day ceremony.
At 11 a.m., there will be a regular Veterans Day program held at the Pettis County Courthouse, followed by a lunch of chili or soup to be held at the VFW post located at Second Street and Ohio Avenue.
At 3 p.m., the “Parade of Heroes” will begin.
The parade route is slated to begin at Seventh Street and Ohio Avenue, run down Kentucky Street, then to Main Street, then to Second Street, then to Lamine Avenue, and end at the courthouse, Gallagher said.
Gallagher encourages all groups in and outside Pettis County to participate.
“We are looking for any patriotic organization to be part of our parade to celebrate our heroes,” Gallagher said.
High school bands, schoolchildren and veterans organizations are especially encouraged to be involved, Gallagher added.
