One dead, one hurt in crash on U.S. 50 and state Route W

Terry L. Finley, 53, of La Monte, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 50 near state Route W early Wednesday.

The accident occurred at 6:30 a.m. when a 2005 Chrysler driven by Larry D. Lowe, 39, of Sedalia, was traveling westbound on U.S. 50 and crossed the center line. Lowe’s vehicle struck the 1993 International Tractor driven by Finley, who was traveling eastbound on U.S. 50, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Lowe’s vehicle ran off the right side of the road and came to a rest on its wheels. Finley’s vehicle also ran off the right side of the road, overturned and caught fire, the Highway Patrol report stated.

Finley was pronounced dead at the scene by Pettis County Coroner Skip Smith. Lowe was taken to University of Columbia by Lifeflight Air Ambulance with serious injuries, the Highway Patrol reported.

Wreckage from the collision between the car and the fertilizer truck closed a one-mile section of the highway for nearly four hours as state troopers investigated the scene. The road has since been reopened.

According to a Missouri Department of Natural Resources news release, an estimated 200 gallons of diesel fuel and 12,000 pounds of fertilizer were spilled from the vehicle driven by Finley.

Members of the Smithton Fire Department initially responded to the accident and took steps to prevent the flow of the fuel into a nearby creek. The DNR dispatched an emergency responder from Jefferson City to the scene Wednesday to oversee the continuing clean-up efforts.
