Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591 Ladies Auxiliary is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a cake walk, parade, lunch and auction on March 12.
This is the second year the ladies have sponsored this event. Barbara Erickson, event chairwoman, said the women decided to do this because the city no longer hosts St. Patrick’s Day activities.
The cake walk will kick-off at 9 a.m. at VFW Post 2591 at 121 S. Ohio Ave. A minimum of 10 people are needed per walk and the cost is 50 cents.
Line-up for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Seventh Street and Ohio Avenue. Bands, floats, cars and walking entries are needed. The deadline to enter is March 5 and forms are available by calling Erickson at 827-3793 or Kathy Wright at 826-6900.
No entry form is needed for children 14 and younger who want to ride their bikes, scooters or pedal cars in the parade.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and the theme is “Irish Spring.”
Irish stew and chili will be served after the parade at the VFW. Donations will be taken. Cake walks will continue during the lunch.
An auction will begin at 12:30 p.m. with Glen Glidewell as the auctioneer. Tickets for a 50/50 pot, basket of booze and pot of gold (100 $1 Sacagawea gold coins) will be sold for $1 or six for $5. The drawing will begin after the auction.
“None of us get paid for this. Money that we will make will stay in this community,” Erickson said. Proceeds will go to local charities and to assist veterans, those in the military and their families.
