Johnson County Coroner C.L. Holdren ruled the Monday morning death of an airman stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base a suicide, according to investigators.

Capt. Aaron Miller, with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, said the airman, identified as Brian K. Wood, was found by friends about 2:40 a.m. Monday morning.

“The coroner ruled it a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Miller said.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office were assisted in their investigation by personnel from the Air Force Office of Special Investigation.

In a Whiteman press release on Monday, officials expressed condolences to the airman’s friends and family.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased airman. This is a tragic situation for everyone,” said Brig. Gen. Scott Vander Hamm, 509th Bomb Wing Commander.

The general also said that wing leaders, including chaplains and counselors, are available to offer support to people who knew the deceased airman, according to the release.
