South Ohio Avenue will run green on Saturday during the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Sedalia.
Hosted again this year by the VFW Post 2591 Ladies Auxiliary, the parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will run from Seventh Street to Main Street along Ohio. Registered floats will assemble at East Seventh Street at 9:30 a.m.
Children 14 and younger who would like to march in the parade should also meet at 9:30 a.m. at the assembly point.
Barbara Erickson, the auxiliary’s senior vice president, said the group likes to make adjustments and improvements each year to the parade and is excited about the 26 entries that signed up for this year’s event.
“We learn every year. This year we are excited about adding the category in the parade for children. They can show up at 9:30 and walk or ride bikes or skateboards or scooters,” Erickson said. “We hope to see a lot of children turn out.”
Erickson said her grown grandchildren will help supervise children marching in the parade.
Other events planned for the day include a cakewalk at 9 a.m. at the VFW Post 2591 Hall at 121 S. Ohio Ave.; an Irish stew and chili lunch at the hall after the parade (free will donations accepted); and a fundraising auction at the hall to begin between 11:30 a.m. and noon.
Erickson said all proceeds from the day’s events will be used by the auxiliary to fund a number of local projects and causes through the year.
The group raised about $4,000 last year that was used to support veterans, active-duty service member families, and area Head Start and senior programs.
“One hundred percent goes back to the community,” she said.
“Our merchants are wonderful. That is where we get our auction items, and they are always so very generous about giving us donations.”
