Lightning may have been the cause of a power outage Friday morning, according to Kansas City Power and Light.
About 450 residents in the eastern portions of town were without power for about an hour starting at 8:40 a.m.
“We know a thunderstorm came through the area early Friday morning and it’s likely lightning was involved but it’s hard to tell when it’s a major storm,” said Kelli Hindes, a spokesperson for KCP&L. “Our crews were able to get to the affected area quickly and restore power within the hour.”
Hindes said if lightning strikes a power line or other piece of equipment, an automated fire protection system is triggered.
“When that happens a breaker is opened automatically and our crews then patrol the lines to find exactly where the breakage was to restore power,” she said.
