Employees of Ryan’s exchanged hugs and good-byes in the parking lot Wednesday morning after learning the buffet restaurant has gone out of business.
A sign affixed to the entrance door read, “This location has permanently closed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we sincerely appreciate your patronage over the years.”
Management referred all inquiries to the company website, but the Sedalia store had already been removed from the restaurant locator on ryans.com by Wednesday morning.
Melissa Sheer, spokeswoman for Buffets Inc., the parent company of Ryan’s, said via email that “compared to other, better performing restaurants in the Buffets system, the Sedalia location was an underperforming restaurant.”
She said restaurants in the chain typically employ 30 to 40 full- and part-time employees, and that the Sedalia location’s staff learned of the restaurant closing Wednesday morning.
Canned goods and other items that could be safely transported to another restaurant were moved, while perishable items were disposed of appropriately.
The Sedalia location opened in September 1996. It offered a variety of hot and cold foods, a soup and salad bar and an array of desserts.
