September 8, 2012

Smith-Cotton’s boys cross country team took 10th place out of 13 teams at Friday’s University of Central Missouri Invitational in Warrensburg. Due to weather, the boys and girls ran simultaneously on the 2.5-mile course.

Chancey Johnson paced the Tigers with a 46th-place 15:01. Next were Michael Chernookiy (54th, 15:10), Victor Ronzon (75th, 15:29), Chance Johnson (94th, 15:53) and Brad Burton (102nd, 16:05).

Warrensburg won the team race and their runner, Trent Classen, won the individual race (out of 240 boys) in 13:33.

On the girls side, the Lady Tigers didn’t field a team score. Rachel Howieson finished 31st with a time of 18:06. Other finishers were Katlyn Geotz (56th, 18:55), Kaitlyn Walters (81st, 20:03) and Jazmine Meyer (97th, 21:08).

Kaitlyn Stryczek, of Lee’s Summit, won the race (featuring 142 girls) in 15:53. Lee’s Summit also won the team title.

“Both of these races were chock full of stiff competition, so we feel like this shows us where we want to go, and sometimes you need that,” said Smith-Cotton coach Tara Clark. “Our next meet is at home, and this helps us gear toward that and feel like we’re ready to race for our home crowd.”
