City Council receives audit results

An audit of the 2012 city finances showed the city is in good standing after the Sedalia City Council heard a presentation from certified public accountants during its pre-meeting Monday.



According to Fred Korte, with Boonville-based Gerding, Korte & Chitwood, finances are, “in good condition, as in prior years.”



“We have an outside firm conduct an audit of our finances every year, which costs us a little but is worth the price to have outside eyes looking over our statements,” said City Administrator Gary Edwards. “And this year, as in years past, we had a very good audit.”



Edwards said the firm starts its audit immediately after the fiscal year ends March 31. This year shows the city increased its total net assets by nearly $3 million and reported an ending fund balance of approximately $16.5 million. The city’s general fund balance — which is not assigned to projects — totaled $10.1 million.



“The information presented isn’t new,” Edwards said. “We’re constantly looking at our finances and updating our budgets, but it’s good to have it all done in one place with objectivity.”



Council voted to formally accept the audit during its regular meeting.



Council also:



• Approved a bid for the sale of three Sedalia police cruisers, $4,921. Ward 3 Councilman Wiley Walter questioned the low price of the bid saying, “I’ve been griping about this since I started on council. These are high quality cars and they should be worth more than we’re getting.”



Walter asked if they had been offered locally, and Sedalia Police Department Cmdr. Matt Wirt told council the department had placed an ad for a 30-day notice on a public bid in the Democrat.



“The highest bid offered was $381 using that method,” Wirt said. “We haven’t had luck with auctioning them off locally.”



• Approved the purchase of four car video cameras for the SPD, $12,992.



• Approved a bid for demolition of buildings at 203 and 204 W. Main St., $82,500.



• Approved an agreement and bid with Braik Brother’s Tree Care for a contract for yard waste grinding, $34,825.



• Rejected a bid for surveillance cameras for intersections along the railroad effected by the closure of the Washington Avenue bridge.



• Approved amendments to city ordinances dealing with demolition and construction cleanup, grass height and the definition of rubbish.



• Accepted three new city streets — Wisconsin Avenue, Granny Lane and McKee Avenue.



• Granted a rezoning application to change 601 W. Pettis Ave. from single-family to commercial property.



• Approved the purchase of a property at 1509 S. Ingram Ave. by Bothwell Regional Health Center.



• Approved a license agreement with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for Katy Trail access to Clover Dell park.



• Approved an agreement with the Missouri Department of Conservation for a TRIM grant, $10,000.



• Approved design services with Ochsner Hare and Hare, LLC for a downtown gateway arch, $1,750.



• Approved a letter of support from the city for the construction of a historical display at West 16th Street and South Limit Avenue on the Missouri State Fairgrounds.
