Losing our grip on the republic

November 21, 2012

On the Nov. 13 Opinion page, Bill Gordon had a guest commentary. I did not get past the second paragraph. I quote, “America remains and will always be a democracy.”

I would recommend Gordon read the Constitution again. Article IV, Section 4, might change people’s take on this country being a democracy. It’s as Benjamin Franklin told a citizen after the convention of 1787: “We have given you a representative form of a republic.” He paused and said, “If you can keep it.”

We are getting closer with the 17th amendment. Check it out. Hail and farewell to the republic of the United States of America.
