December 14, 2012
The W-K Holiday Shootout celebrated its 10-year anniversary last December and unveiled something new.
Tournament staff selected an all-tournament team for the first time, and many of those players will return when the 11th Shootout tips off on Friday.
This year’s event features 30 schools competing in 28 games, 14 girls matchups and 14 boys contests.
The Shootout was created in the spring of 2001 by former Smith-Cotton athletic director Tom Knight and State Fair Community College athletic director Darren Pannier.
“(Tom) had the idea to bring in different opponents for the area schools to play,” Pannier said in a press release. “After he gave me the idea, I just started calling local high schools and asking them if they would play a school from outside the area.”
The Shootout took off from there and now 14 of the 15 schools in the Democrat’s coverage area (all except Green Ridge) participate.
Four teams will play girls/boys doubleheaders on Friday.
The night wraps up with a boys matchup between Kaysinger Conference schools La Monte and Northwest at 9 p.m.
Cortlen Austin, who was named to the all-tournament team last December, leads Northwest.
Eight games are set for Saturday, with Smithton and Slater tipping off a girls/boys doubleheader at 10:30 a.m.
The boys game is set to start at noon and will feature all-tournament pick Dane Apsher, of Smithton, who scored 35 points at the Shootout last season.
All-tournament pick Madisen Brethower leads Skyline into a 1:30 p.m. girls matchup against Windsor.
Sacred Heart will face Northwest Girls Basketball Invitational tournament champion Bunceton at 4:30 p.m.
Smith-Cotton’s girls team will meet Boonville at 7:30 p.m. All-tournament selection Elena Sharp is back for S-C.
The boys team from Smith-Cotton will wrap up play against Marshall at 9 p.m.
Cole Camp and Crest Ridge will meet in a girls/boys doubleheader on Monday night. The girls will tip off at 6 p.m., and the boys are set to start at 7:30 p.m.
Cole Camp features all-Shootout selection Tanner Oelrichs, and Crest Ridge returns all-Shootout pick Bre Wonderley.
The tournament resumes Dec. 27 and will feature a pair of tournament champions facing off at 4:30 p.m.
Tipton, along with all-tournament selection Ethan Koechner, won its own tournament, and Otterville took the Northwest tournament.
The final day of the Shootout is set for Dec. 28 and will feature eight games.
A Warsaw-Grain Valley doubleheader opens play at noon. The boys matchup features Warsaw tournament champion Warsaw and is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
Admission costs $5 per day for adults. Children 12 and younger will be admitted for free.
