VFW to salute Iraq, Afghanistan veterans

February 21, 2013

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591 will host a salute to veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan on Sunday at 121 S. Ohio Ave. The public is invited to attend this event.

“I swore 40 years ago if I was ever in a position, where we had veterans that were deployed that I was going to do everything in my power to do what wasn’t done for us,” said Gary Gill, a Vietnam veteran and program organizer. “I feel like it’s so important to say welcome home. We love you. We want you to feel thanked and appreciated for your service.”

The event will begin with a ham-and-bean dinner at 1 p.m. with proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors project and the VFW veteran’s service officer program. Caitlin Bird will provide the musical entertainment.

A program honoring these veterans will begin at 2 p.m. Mayor Elaine Horn will be the speaker. An auction of pies made by a variety of people will immediately follow the program. Glen Glidewell and Skip Bay will be the auctioneers.
