Three Sedalia men were arrested for burglary after they broke into the Uptown Theater on Tuesday looking for ghosts.
According to Sedalia Police Department reports, around 1:30 a.m. Charles E. Cypert, 26, and Jonathan M. Cornell, 25, both of the 1500 block of North Ohio Avenue, and Alonzo P. Casler, 33, of the 200 block of East Chestnut Street, were out at a local bar celebrating Casler’s birthday.
According to SPD Cmdr. Matt Wirt, the trio heard the Uptown Theater, which has been closed since the late 1970s, was haunted and decided to break in. Police received several calls from residents in the area who heard glass breaking and upon arriving at the theater, officers saw the three running out the back door.
“They were chased and caught fairly quickly. They didn’t get too far,” Wirt said.
Meg Liston, administrator of Sedalia Downtown Development Inc., which now owns the Uptown, said there was approximately $180 worth of damage done to two glass doors, which would have to be replaced, but she was taking the break-in with a grain of salt.
“To the best of my knowledge there aren’t any ghosts at the Uptown, but I would have let them in to look around if they had asked,” she said with a laugh.
Cypert, Cornell and Casler were taken to the Pettis County Jail pending formal filing of charges.
