Entries sought for First Lady’s pie contest

May 3, 2013

Pettis County residents are invited to pull out recipe boxes and pie pans in preparation for the First Lady’s Pie Contest at the Missouri State Fair.

“The First Lady’s Pie Contest is a time-honored Missouri State Fair tradition,” said Director of Agriculture Jon Hagler. “We look forward to seeing the creativity, hard work and outstanding skill of Missouri families on display in perfect crusts and fillings, from Missouri pecans to sweet fruits.”

The contest will again be hosted by Missouri’s First Lady Georganne Nixon in the fairgrounds’ Home Economics Building. Entry forms for the annual contest are now available online at mostatefair.com and accessible through the Fair’s Premium Guide.

Open to all amateur bakers, the contest is divided into two categories — soft pies (custard/cream) and fruit pies. Winners in each of those categories, as well as a Best of Show winner, will be awarded cash prizes. Winners will also be recognized during a ceremony in the Home Economics Building following the contest.

The deadline to enter a pie in the competition is Aug. 1. Each baker may enter only one pie in the contest. Those interested can enter by submitting their recipe and official Missouri State Fair entry form via email to

entryforms@mda.mo.gov, or by fax at 827-8169 or 827-8160.
