Letter: Business won't disappear in a puff of smoke

May 10, 2013

I would like to address the concerns of business owners in Sedalia who believe that a smoke-free ordinance will hurt their business. Missouri peer-reviewed studies show that businesses such as restaurants and bars are not hurt by those policies; as a matter of fact, many have increased revenue.

It makes sense, when you realize that 75 percent of Sedalia citizens do not smoke and many of them stay away from businesses where they are exposed to toxic secondhand smoke. The tobacco industry feeds a lot of misinformation to businesses to make them fearful of these policies ó but just look around in Missouri. Columbia, Warrensburg, Jefferson City and 19 other Missouri cities have smoke-free restaurants and bars ó and business is thriving.

Letís support a healthy living environment by implementing a smoke-free ordinance and keep our money right here in Sedalia.
