Fair season begins with a party

June 7, 2013

With the smell of popcorn and corn dogs in the air, sponsors and guests celebrated the annual kickoff party to the 2013 Missouri State Fair on Thursday at the Lowell Mohler Assembly Hall on the fairgrounds.

“We’re always counting down to the fair, but the kickoff party is the official start of fair season, so we’re very excited,” said Fair Director Mark Wolfe. “Right now we’re working out all those final details. Contracts take between six and eight months to complete so it’s nice to see that finished, and just getting everything ready to go for August.”

The fair, scheduled for Aug. 8 through 18, will see many favorite returning and new acts, added director of marketing Tammie Nichols.

“We had a lot of great response to some of our free acts like the Hendrick’s racing pig show, so we knew we wanted to invite them back so we could continue to provide affordable, fun entertainment for the whole family,” Nichols said. “We’re bringing in a lot of new things this year, too, trying to find that balance of what people will want to see.”

Nichols’ noted this year’s theme, “Chicks Dig It,” will be seen throughout the fair, culminating in a special Women in Agriculture Day on Aug. 15. Women will receive free admission to the fair and a special photo tribute of women in Missouri agriculture will be on display. Other special days will include Military Appreciation Day, Aug. 11; Missouri Farmers Care Food Drive ,Aug. 13; Youth in Ag Day, Aug. 17; and Law Enforcement and Firefighter Day, Aug 18. During these days discounted and free admission will be available to those who qualify.

“Something we’re always excited about is seeing all the youths in agriculture out at the fair,” Wolfe said. “The most important thing we do every year is to support our youth in 4H and FFA; they’re the future of agriculture and the fair is a great place to them to compete and display their knowledge.”

Wolfe said he was looking forward to the start of the fair and hoped to see big crowds in August.

“This is the 111th Missouri State Fair and I know we’ve got a lot of great things planned,” he said. “We’re excited to see everyone come out and celebrate all the fair has to offer.”
