Democrat earns five awards from APME

Democrat Staff

February 14, 2014

Current and former Democrat staff members took home five awards from the Missouri Associated Press Managing Editor’s annual newspaper competition for work published in 2013.

Editor Dennis Rich, reporter Emily Jarret and former intern Andy Lyons took first in their division in Community Affairs/Public Interest reporting for their eight-piece “Meth at the Crossroads” series. The series, funded in part through a competitive grant awarded to the Democrat last spring by the national Associated Press Media Editors, took an in-depth look at the methamphetamine problem in the area, touching on use, manufacture, distribution, interdiction and treatment.

Sports reporter Eric Ingles took second place in Spot Sports for his piece: “MSHSAA makes pitch for spring championship.”

Former Editor Bob Satnan took second place for feature writing for his “Kenyan Doctor now, thanks to ‘American Mom.’”

And, former photographer Sydney Brink took second and third place for his coverage of the 2013 ATF raids and the coming home ceremony for the 35th Combat Aviation Brigade after their return from a tour in Kuwait.

Publisher Lynn Kidd complimented staff on their awards, saying it demonstrates the Democrat’s continuing commitment to community journalism.

“These are well deserved honors and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff,” Kidd said.

Editor Dennis Rich echoed Kidd’s remarks, adding “we have had a challenging year at the Democrat, but we continue to strive to present the community with thought provoking and in-depth coverage of the issues that matter.”

“I am extremely proud of these honors and want to credit Emily Jarrett for her tremendous work, both as a writer and a project leader, on our ‘Meth at the Crossroads’ series,” Rich said. “Emily, like everyone here, continues to go above and beyond despite the sometimes difficult waters we have to tread as professional print journalists. I am constantly inspired by the professionalism and talent of my co-workers and thank them for their hard work.”
