Where did the flags go?

March 4, 2014

Dear Editor:

The chances of this letter making the Sedalia Democrat are (my guess) about 1,000 to 1, not very good odds wouldn’t you say?

Reason, very simple, the subject matter. Why have the Sedalia churches taken the American flags out of public view. My church (First United Methodist Church-Celebration Center) has done just that. Why? When asked, I did not get a satisfactory explanation. I was told the decision was made a long time ago.

We have one flying pole outside, at times one setting in the entry way but sure as hell not one flying in front of our congregation during regular service. Sacred Heart has made the same move, again, why?

As you can tell I am on my pedestal.

Drive up or down Ohio Street, your 40&8 organization is responsible for their existence at a considerable expense. This flag flew over every base came in South Vietnam, stood in the entry way of every company headquarters. We were required to salute when passing, I considered that as an honor.

As a setting member of your City Council each and every meeting is opened by the mayor asking one of us to lead the Pledge of Allegiance, again, what an honor.

Sedalia’s churchs should reconsider this decision. Put the flag back where it belongs, back in public view.
