Ultimately, I guess people of goodwill are going to have to speak up. Back in 1964, when the battle for civil rights was finally won, I thought the fight was over. I’m not one who likes to get involved in street fights. I prefer not to call people names. I believe in saying what needs to be said in a respectful manner. Obviously, I would rather disagree without becoming disagreeable.
Many people have complaints about the Affordable Health Care Act. That’s the name of it and that’s what it needs to be called. Those that disagree with it, have the right not to use it. The president of the United States is Barack Obama.
President Obama is the first African-American president in our history. Memory requires that we travel back to remember that our history is one of a checkered past. While most Americans seem to have accepted the president as he is, there are many who seem to resent the fact that he is a member of African-American society.
As Missourians we are Democrats and Republicans. We belong to different political parties, but we salute the same flag, so we are not enemies. Democrats and Republicans disagree in many ways and every four years we vote our choice. In the meantime, we operate under a Constitution.
The Affordable Care Act has become quite controversial and many people would like to repeal it. Millions have chosen to make it a part of their life. So, as it is, it will probably remain in our life. Those who disagree with it, will probably have to get over it and move on.
A few years ago our president was George W. Bush. He was our president for eight years. Some people agreed with him and some didn’t and life went on The same will be true of our present leader. However the health care plan and the president have become personal enemies to some and they are having a hard time getting over their feelings.
Within a few short months it will be time again for us to elect a new leader. It’s not too early for people to begin to select their next leader. If they work hard, by the next election they can make their choice.
In the meantime, the rest of us can concentrate on our present leader. We can hope to work on establishing a new minimum wage. We are tired and worn out from trying to make our ends meet.
Furthermore, it’s time we worked on a plan for immigration. There are millions of people on our shores for whom we need to find a way for them to become citizens.
We cannot stop working to make our country a better place to live for the next generation. We have to use every minute and every hour to make our world better. We cannot waste time on dead ideas.
For many years, political leaders have worked to have every American covered by a health plan. So far, the Affordable Health Care Act seems to be working. Let’s give it a chance.
We can fight anytime.
