It’s checkmate for Luke VonGretzinger, 9, a third grader at St. Paul’s Lutheran School who is participating in the school’s K-eighth grade chess tournament Saturday morning. VonGretzinger reaches over to shake his opponent’s hand in the junior division Ashton Matheis, 8, a second grader at the school. “My dad (Erich) taught me how to play chess,” VonGretzinger said. “I wanted to enter the chess club because I’ve been getting better. For some reason I’ve been getting a lot of checkmates.”
