The Whiteman Enlisted Spouses Club is hosting its second annual Whiteman for Warriors 5K next weekend, and all proceeds go to a cause that is special to those living and working at Whiteman Air Force Base.
The event benefits the Wounded Warriors Project, a nonprofit organization whose simple mission statement is “to honor and empower Wounded Warriors.” According to its website, the group raises awareness and gets help from the public for the needs of injured service members and provides programs and services to help meet those needs.
“I was the president of the club last year and I had always seen commercials for Wounded Warrior Project,” said WESC parliamentarian Sarah Christy. “My husband is an airman, and I thought ‘that could be my husband.’ We always knew we wanted to do something for the organization and the 5K came into play.”
Christy said there will be a nutrition station after the race for all participants with food, water and Gatorade. Each participant will also get a swag bag of coupons, samples, and snacks.
When asked why people should participate in the race next weekend, Christy had a simple answer.
“To support our troops,” she said. “Right now any extra support our troops can receive, especially in their time of need, is greatly appreciated.”
Early registration ends Saturday, and those who register early will be guaranteed a T-shirt and participation medal. To sign up early, participants may register online and pay via credit or debit card. Christy will also be collecting paper registrations from those who wish to pay with cash or check from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Whiteman Library.
Online registration is available at whitemanforwarriors.com until midnight Friday, May 23, and paper registration will be available again beginning at 7:30 a.m. the day of the race. The registration fee is $25. The race begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 24 at Knob Noster High School. It is open to all ages and includes a run or walk.
