The Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri is hoping to attract community support for its programs with the inaugural Glow Run/Walk on Friday night.
The event replaces the “Race 4 Reasons,” but opted for a new “family-friendly event” this year, according to Communications Coordinator Emily Jarrett.
“We wanted to do something a little different,” Jarrett said. ““Some bigger cities have a similar event and it was something we saw worked really well. This is new for Sedalia. We don’t have anything like this.”
The run will begin at 8:15 p.m. Friday on the State Fair Community College campus. Participants will receive glow-in-the-dark T-shirts, as well as necklaces and other “glow swag” and will be directed by volunteers holding glow-in-the-dark batons. Immediately following the race will be a medal ceremony at the Fred. E. Davis Multipurpose Building. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in several age categories including: 55 and over, 40-54, 30-39, 20-29 and 19 and under.
Registration for the event runs until 8 p.m. Friday and costs $25 through 7 p.m. Thursday and $30 the day of the race.
Glow gear will also be available for purchase for $5. An advance packet pick-up and raffle will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at GNC in Thompson Hills Shopping Center. Those wishing to register may do so online at bgckids.com or by searching for “Glow 5K Run/Walk presented by Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri” on raceroster.com.
Proceeds from the race will go toward general operations, Jarrett said, including support of programs such as “Power Hour” and “Healthy Habits.” Funds are also used to keep summer program costs affordable, with elementary students paying $10 a day and teens paying $2 per day through the summer.
As of Tuesday, 302 people had registered for the run/walk, a marked increase over the less than 100 participants in last year’s “Race 4 Reasons.”
