Several members of my family were born in June. In fact, there were more members born in June than any other month.
June is a regular holiday month. Besides birthdays there are also graduations, weddings and anniversaries, not to mention Father’s Day. Some years, Father’s Day almost always falls on someone’s birthday in my family.
I always think of June as Garden Month. Beautiful flowers are blooming throughout the month. Even on trips through the countryside, the flowers seem to push their way through. And always there are the roses growing on fences or wherever there is something for them to cling to.
For many years I enjoyed fishing in the summertime. Especially, since so many conservation areas have opened over the state. When I was a kid, almost every creek was overrun with tall grass and weeds. With everything cleaned up, the countryside is a wonderful place to visit. Walking along the trails is an adventure by itself.
The summer weekends when I wasn’t fishing I enjoyed flea markets. Setting up in towns across the state is a wonderful adventure. I have always considered that an opportunity to get to know the best of Missourians. The year I rented a booth on the fairgrounds was one of the best years of my life. I love the way Missourians have of looking out for each other even though they are strangers.
The folks who minded my booth all night were super. They slept in their booth and kept track of mine at the same time. These people had been working fairs for some 30 years of their lives. They taught me how to work an outside job. I’ll remember their lessons all my life.
One of the things I learned about people who work on outside jobs is that no one is a stranger. They are always anxious to help you learn the ropes. You become a member of their group. It’s enough to make you run away from home.
In any case, I can understand the mind set of people who run off with the circus. When I was growing up, I remember that virtually every year I always knew someone that either ran off with the fair or stayed in town after the fair left. It’s a lifestyle that one can easily become attracted to.
Summer is my favorite season. Maybe, I should think about moving to Florida.
