Alewel’s exhibits grand champion bacon at fair
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Alewel’s Country Meats exhibited the grand champion bacon at the Missouri State Fair for the second year in a row and took the top award in a national competition.
The Warrensburg business has participated in the smoked meat contest at the Missouri State Fair for more than 50 years. Alewel’s has been honored as champions in the bacon, country hams, sausage, and jerky competitions.
This year’s prize bacon brought $2,000 at the annual Ham Breakfast for $2,000 and was purchased by Missouri Rural Electric Co-op.
In July, Alewel’s exhibited the grand champion dry cured bacon at the American Association of Meat Processors in Cincinnati.
More 600 smoked meat products were entered in 20 classes in the national competition.
Alewel’s entered the champion snack stick with its Log of Jerky.
Austin Alewel, son of Randy and Teresa Alewel, accepted the awards at the convention. Austin is home this summer to run the business while his father is deployed with the Army to Kosovo.
Austin won a $2,000 academic scholarship from AAMP. He has now returned as a sophomore at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
