ROUNDUP: S-C rallies to beat Clinton in softball

Soccer Tigers lose 5-0 to Rock Bridge

The Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers scored eight runs in the sixth inning Monday to beat Clinton 16-13.

Clinton took a 13-8 lead with six runs in the top of the sixth inning in a West Central Conference softball game at Centennial Park.

The lead changed hands four teams. S-C led 1-0 after one inning, Clinton went ahead 3-1 in the top of the second. The Lady Tigers scored four in the third to take a 7-3 lead.

Jessica Hardy led S-C’s 10-hit attack. She went 4-for-4 with three doubles and one triple. She had four RBIs and scored three runs.

Katelyn Hardy struck out five in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win.

S-C coach Jason Tischer said that his team took advantage of several Clinton walks and errors in improving to 3-10.

Montrose 4, Knob Noster 2

Montrose scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning Monday to beat the Knob Noster softball team.

The score was tied at 1 entering the fifth inning.

Brandi Sahlfeld took the loss, allowing no earned runs on one hit with four strikeouts and six walks in three innings of relief.

Starter Brooke Jackson pitched four strong innings. She gave up one run on one hit with seven strikeouts and five walks.

Alaina Willming had one of the Panthers’ three hits. She scored a run and had an RBI for Knob Noster, which fell to 3-12.

Kourtney Cherry and Sahlfeld had Knob Noster’s other hits.

Lone Jack tournament

Catherine Plakorus hit a walk-off grand slam Saturday to lead the Warsaw softball team to the Lone Jack softball tournament championship.

The Wildcats beat Lone Jack 14-1 in the title game.

The home run was Plakorus’ only hit.

Kelsie Moore and Shawnah Kee had two hits and two RBIs apiece for Warsaw.

Kelli Wenberg added two hits and one RBI.

Wenberg pitched five no-hit innings for the win. She gave up one unearned run with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Kristina Strader pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the Wildcats’  10-0 win over Kingsville.

She struck out five and walked one.

Warsaw beat Plattsburg 4-1 in the first round.

The Wildcats scored a pair of unearned insurance runs in the sixth inning.

Strader and Kee had two hits apiece for Warsaw.

Wenberg earned the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits with 12 strikeouts and one walk in seven innings.
 
BOYS SOCCER

Rock Bridge 5, Smith-Cotton 0

The Rock Bridge Bruins and their artificial turf gave the Smith-Cotton boys soccer team a rude welcome Monday in Columbia.

Rock Bridge shot out to a 4-0 halftime lead and was never seriously challenged.

“We were flat, and they came at us,” S-C coach Jason Curry said. “They scored maybe 10 to 12 minutes into the match. We couldn’t get anything going, couldn’t maintain possession.”

Curry said his team didn’t adjust well to its first game on the fast artificial turf this season.

The Tigers (3-5) will  host Clinton at 5 p.m. today at Susie Ditzfeld Field.

Stover 1, Lincoln 0

Andy Seaton scored 31 seconds into the match Monday to lead third-seeded Stover into the semifinal round of the Kaysinger Conference soccer tournament.

Goalkeeper Tyler Wilson earned the shutout, making 14 saves in a match played in Stover.

Stover (7-3) will meet Green Ridge in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday. La Monte will meet Lincoln in a consolation game at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Green Ridge 2, La Monte 1

Seventh-seeded Green Ridge knocked off No. 2 La Monte in the first round of the Kaysinger Conference soccer tournament on Monday at Stover.

The match was scoreless at halftime. Green Ridge scored the game-winner in the closing minutes.

VOLLEYBALL

Sacred Heart 2, Tipton 0

The Sacred Heart volleyball team started off slow Monday night in its first home match after playing the last eight on the road.

Sacred Heart held a slim 5-4 lead when Rachel Fritz ignited an 8-0 run in the first game of Sacred Heart’s 25-9, 25-12, sweep of Tipton at Sacred Heart School.

“Fritz served aggressively and got great help from the front row play of Laura McMullin, Kelsey Baldwin and Courtney Curtiss,” Sacred Heart coach David Fall said.

Paige Shipley paced Sacred Heart with seven kills and eight digs.

Curtiss had a team-high 12 assists. Baldwin added eight digs and eight service points.

Osceola 2, Green Ridge 0

State-ranked Osceola fought off Green Ridge on  Monday night for a 25-21, 27-25 win at Green Ridge.

Osceola is ranked No. 8 in Class 1. Green Ridge is unranked.

Megan Askey and McKenna Dixon led Green Ridge with six kills each.

Ashley Hampton and Torey Williams had a team-high 10 assists each.

Savannah Williams paced the Lady Tigers (9-6) with four blocks. Kristen Morton had a team-high 14 digs.

Laurel Larimore had a club-best nine service points.

Green Ridge won the junior high A game 21-25, 25-8, 25-13 and the B game 45-20.

The Smith-Cotton boys swimming team went 2-2 Monday in a five-team meet at the Gladstone Community Center.

Ehan Sherman won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 17.90 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:20.81.

Quinton Dobnikar won diving with a score of 203.35.

The Tigers earned top-five finishes in four other events.

Jeff Crouch, Dobnikar, Dalton Luper and Sherman took second in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.10.

Kyle McAllister placed third in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.69.

Derek Thomas was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 1:13.77.

Rush Walters took fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:19.70.

Crouch, Dobnikar, Sherman and Thomas placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.72.

GIRLS TENNIS

St. Pius X 9, Smith-Cotton 0

In singles, Samantha Schnabel beat Rebecca Wooldridge 8-0, Olivia Rowse beat Chelsey Muths 8-0, Zreni Fernandez beat Sarah Rae 8-1, Hannah Eberle beat Susan Bell 8-4, Mary Carnes beat Kyra Kendrick 8-0 and Katie Gubgin beat Emily LaFavor 8-0.

In doubles, Schnabel-Rowse beat Muths-Rae 8-1, Eberle-Carnes beat Wooldridge-Bell 8-4, and Fernandez-Mitbo beat Kendrick-LaFavor 8-6.

GIRLS GOLF

Jefferson City tournament

Smith-Cotton placed 14th in the 18-team Jefferson City girls golf tournament on Monday at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club.

Notre Dame de Sion won the tournament with a 333. St. Joseph’s Academy placed second with 348.

The Lady Tigers shot a 422.

Amanda Azan paced S-C with a 19-over 91. Lauren Azan shot a 96, Jenny Swafford 117, Laura Hancock 118 and Casey Hurley 124.

Green Ridge 231, St. Paul Lutheran 240

Sara Wiley shot a 55 Monday to lead the Green Ridge girls golf team to victory at Emma.

Alison Ingram’s 57, Jordan Cave’s 59 and Kim Nye’s 60 rounded out the Lady Tigers’ team score.
