Ready for some sweet treats? Downtown merchants hosting chocolate crawl
Chocolate lovers are invited to follow the red hearts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at downtown Sedalia businesses for sweet treats, as Sedalia Downtown Development Inc. is hosting its first chocolate crawl.
The group looked to see what types of events other communities host throughout the year to promote their downtown businesses. The chocolate crawl in Lee’s Summit caught their attention.
“We hope we have a lot of women come down for Valentine’s Day shopping,” said Meg Liston, administrator of SDDI.
Customers are invited to come downtown and follow the red hearts for free chocolate treats varying from hot chocolate to candy. They will receive a card and each business will stamp it.
Those who visit at least five stores may turn in their card for a drawing to win a basket filled with merchandise from the 15 businesses. Cards must be dropped off before 2 p.m. at the old Sampler’s building at 307 S. Ohio Ave. The winner does not need to be present to win. The basket is on display now in the Sampler’s window.
SDDI is hoping to have a crowd between 100 to 150 shoppers attend the event. The goal is to have shoppers visit stores they might not have seen or visited before.
“I think it will be bring lots of people downtown because everybody likes chocolate,” said Kay Shull, owner of Kay’s Bridal and Tuxedo.
She’s decided to make chocolate-covered heart marshmallows on a stick for this event. She’s also going to make some cake balls dipped in chocolate.
“We hope they will enjoy looking at our wedding gallery and new prom dresses. It’s an exciting time for young people,” said Shull. “It will be a treat for their moms then to have some chocolate.”
Other businesses on the crawl are Chelsea’s Antiques, New to You, Rock ’n Rollers, Becca’s Framing, Swords Family Pharmacy, Stone Laser Imaging, Ivy Cottage Tea Room, My Nana’s Flea Market, Fitter’s 5th Street Pub, Classic Jewelry, European Food Market, Bizarre Little Corner, Juanita’s House of Antiques and ProVelo.
