Bus driver-turned-beautician enthusiastic about new career, eager to please

Sedalia Democrat

Sedalia’s newest salon is giving customers an interesting welcome.

April Shapley, 45, owner of Hello Gorgeous Salon, answers telephone calls from clients by saying, “Hello, gorgeous.”

“I have always loved the name, and it really brightens people’s day,” Shapley said.

Since high school, Shapley wanted to be a beautician but never had the time to go to school. After working after 11 years as a bus driver for Smithton schools, she decided to just do it.

“You can’t just take a year out of your life and say ‘I’m not going to work anymore,’ ” Shapley said.

Shapley graduated from the American College of Hair Design Inc., of Sedalia, in May.

“It was really weird going back to school after so long, but I am glad to be out,” Shapley said.

During her year in school, Shapley learned many styling techniques. She was named student of the month and was a member of the college’s Elite Team. She said her family was a great support group for her.

Her husband, Charles Shapley, thinks his wife’s salon is great.

“I was the cheerleader on the side. I would help her study for tests, and she always did good. I am really proud of her.”

Shapley kept records of all 504 customers she encountered as a student, writing down their names and a little bit of information about each.

After opening her salon July 30, she contacted them to let them know she opened her own business.

“I have been busy. I take walk-ins and appointments,” Shapley said.

The hardest part of her job is staying away on her days off. Shapley often opens the store for customers who need last-minute haircuts or highlights.

Ericka Asbury, 19, of Sedalia, recently got her hair cut and highlighted by Shapley.

“I’m not picky. I always just say do whatever,” Asbury said.

Most of Shapley’s clients know what they want before they walk in the door. No matter what, Shapley always makes sure to blow-dry and style a client’s hair.

“I usually try to give my clients tips, so they can get the same look I give them here at home,” Shapley said.

Shapley said she stays up to date on the latest trends and techniques.

Hello Gorgeous Salon offers haircuts for men, women and children; perms, highlights, waxing and scalp massages.
