What you need to know: Inaugural Parade
The Inaugural Parade is as old as the presidency — and older than Washington D.C.
George Washington was escorted to Federal Hall in New York City to take the oath of office. Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be escorted through Washington D.C., in 1801.

This year's parade will proceed from the U.S. Capitol to the White House along Pennsylvania Avenue, and over 300,000 people are expected to attend.
The Armed Forces Inaugural Committee conducted a dress rehearsal for this year's parade and ceremony on Jan. 11.
