Fair names winners of market pen of chickens

Sierra Rose Bruse, a daughter of Brad and Pam Bruse, of Princeton, was named the winner of the 2009 Grand Champion Market Pen of Chickens at the Missouri State Fair. Her prize-winning pen of Cornish cross broilers weighed an average of 7.5 pounds. Sierra is a member of the Pine Euev Shine 4-H Club.

Reserve Grand Champion Market Pen of Chickens went to Tanner Ellison, son of Mike and Genel Ellison, of Baring. His pen of jumbo Cornish cross broilers weighed an average of 7 pounds. He is a member of the County Liners 4-H Club.

On August 22, Bruse’s and Ellison’s market pen of chickens will be two of the 12 lots offered in the 2009 Youth in Agriculture Sale of Champions. Proceeds from the annual sale benefit both the wining exhibitors and the Missouri State Fair Youth in Agriculture Scholarship Program.

Due to the support of Youth in Agriculture sponsors, the Missouri State Fair is able to award scholarships to Missouri youth pursuing a degree in an agricultural-related field. Last year, 30 $1,000 scholarships and one $2,500 scholarship were awarded.
