Clell E. Porter, Edwards

Clell E. “Gene” Porter, 76, of Edwards, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at his home.

He was born in Vernon County, on May 10, 1931, a son of Jack and Eula Brown Porter. He was married to JoAnn Porter, who survives of the home.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from Dec. 30, 1948, to Sept. 23, 1951. He was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he served as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

He made his home in west-central Missouri, where he worked as a meat cutter in Nevada, Mo. He was a member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America Local 576. He worked at locker plants in Adrian and owned and operated restaurants in Shell City and Mound City.

After his retirement, he moved to his lake home in the Arrowhead Estates, where he enjoyed fishing the lakes and streams of the Missouri Ozarks.

Also surviving are seven children, Joyce Ann, of Midland, Texas, Peggie McCanles, of Adrian, Stephanie Porter, of Caldwell, Idaho, Clovia Smits, of Edwards, Sandra JoAnn Heaton, of Coral Springs, Fla., Clell E. Porter Jr. of Kansas City; and Keith Porter, of Appleton City; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw.
