Scout Stories: James McCoy
Scouting was not just a childhood experience, but a training ground for adulthood. As a member of Troop 61, under the leadership of Bill Fingland, I acquired knowledge and skills I still use today.
The knots I tie, my camping and canoeing skills, map reading and compass skills and a host of other lifelong skills I use today came from my experience in Scouting.
Through outings, such as week-long canoe trips, Philmont, winter camping and community projects, I learned respect and self reliance. As I reached the rank of Eagle, I could look back on my Scouting days as an exercise for life.
Now as a youth pastor, I have had the privilege of working with young Scouts, guiding them through the paths of life to the rank of Eagle. I believe one of the greatest assets Troop 61 had was the caring and patient leadership of Scoutmaster Bill Fingland. I often tell people that
Scouting was one of the greatest experiences of my life. They ask, were you an Eagle Scout? No, I am an Eagle Scout.
Thank you, Boy Scouts of America.
