Sedalia Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol waiving fees for new members

Teens interested in learning about aviation, aerospace and leadership can enroll in a membership organization free this year thanks to a special grant from the United Way.

The Sedalia Cadet Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, plans to waive membership and participation fees for new members in an effort to ensure economic conditions do not limit young people from joining the organization.

“We’ve seen a drop off in membership this past year,” said Lt. Col. Scott Lawson, commander of the cadet squadron. “Some of that, I believe, is due to the economic situation.”

The Sedalia-Pettis County United Way provided the organization with $1,000 in special grant funding. United Way Executive Director Elle Wasson said the group was able to provide additional money to each of its 22 member agencies after exceeding its $425,000 fundraising goal by more than $82,000.

“They did receive regular additional funding that was allotted for each of the agencies because we went over our campaign fundraising goal,” Wasson said.

Lawson said the Sedalia Cadet Squadron will utilize the additional funds to offset local and national dues for new members entering the program. The membership fees typically run about $61 per participant.

“My guess is we will end up eating more than the United Way is giving us, but if that’s what it takes to give more people the opportunity to participate we’re happy to do that,” Lawson said. “We hope it will attract new members in.”

Lawson described the cadet squadron as a military-structured youth motivation program. It offers educational opportunities highlighting the role aviation and aerospace technology plays in society.

He said members are tested on their studies and have the opportunity to advance in rank through the program.

“Our mission is primarily that they are more self-motivated and self-disciplined by the time they finish,” Lawson said. “We’re working to produce dynamic young Americans for the future.”

Members also have the chance for scholarship opportunities and can participate in leadership academies, summer programs and aviation camps through the organization.

Lawson said anyone between ages 12 and 18 interested in joining can attend the group’s weekly meetings  at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Civil Air Patrol building at 3315 E. Broadway Blvd.
