Hudson: Fair psychic gives this Democrat reporter a peek at the future
Dora Marks has a gift which she has turned into a profession or as she calls it a hobby.
She is a psychic, palm reader and advice giver.
Marks, of Kansas City, has been giving complete strangers advice about their love life and careers at her tent on the Missouri State Fairgrounds for about 15 years.
“They come and they don’t know what to expect. They think it’s fun,” Marks said.
While making my way through the fairgrounds the past couple of days, I was intrigued by the palm readings. Wednesday morning I stopped by and asked Marks to tell me about my future through my hands.
I sat down and flipped over my hands and Marks soon began to blurt out information about me.
One of the first things she told me was that I will live to be 91 years old. I will not die in an accident or from an illness, but of old age.
She continued by waving a glass stick over the creases in my palms and spoke in a quiet voice about my career, finances and love life. I will soon be making more money and although I will never be rich, I will be comfortable, Marks told me.
Marks is an eighth generation palm reader who’s family is originally from Egypt.
“It’s passed down in my family,” Marks said.
She said the “gift” usually skips a generation, but her 10-year-old child has already shown some psychic abilities.
As she continued she told me that I will be traveling over water sometime soon, which is true, and that I will have two children.
Most of the information she provided was fairly generic, but one thing that was surprising was when Marks told me she saw horses in my hands. My mother raises Rocky Mountain Horses and recently I participated in horseback riding lessons.
Marks operates at two businesses in Kansas City where she conducts tarot card, psychic, palm and crystal readings.
At the fair, Marks is offering the tarot cards, psychic and palm readings as other readings require a more intense atmosphere without the distractions of the fair life.
After she finished with our session, I wondered if she has ever had to tell anyone bad news.
“I have to tell the good and the bad,” she said.
On an average day at the fair, Marks will see about 20 people. During the weekends, she is busy non-stop entertaining curious visitors.
Prices begin at $10 for palm readings and increase for other services.
Marks tent is located between the Anastasini Circus tent and the midway.
