Derl Bernard, Sweet Springs

Derl Bernard, 80, of Sweet Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at I-70 Medical Center in Sweet Springs.

He was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Quincy, a son of Harley Lowell and Fern Wood Bernard. On Nov. 3, 1949, he was married to Euladeen Boren, who survives of the home.

He had lived in Sweet Springs since 1953, moving from Osceola. He was owner and operator of Bernard Lumber Co. in Sweet Springs. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Sweet Springs. He served as an alderman for eight terms starting in 1959, served as mayor of Sweet Springs for three terms and served as associate judge in county court.

He was a member of the Lumberman’s Association, Saline County Republican Committee and board member of the I-70 Medical Center board. He served as president of the Sappington Fund in Marshall and of the Weaubleau Alumni Association. He coached Little League for several years and Pony League for two years. He supported all athletic sports from coaching to working football games for 30 years.

Also surviving are three sons, Bob Bernard and Alan Bernard, both of Sweet Springs, and Kevin Bernard, of Sedalia; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Becky Bernard.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Sweet Springs, with the Rev. David Goode and the Rev. Jim West officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or charity of donor’s choice, in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Sweet Springs. Condolences may be left online at www.campbell-lewis.com.
