Taste of Home to serve up ideas for cooks

Sedalia-area cooks will have a chance to learn some new techniques and recipes at the Taste Of Home Cooking School.

The event, sponsored by Bing’s Branches, Sutherlands and The Sedalia Democrat, is set for Oct. 8 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the State Fair Community College campus. The theme for the show is “Fall Comfort Classics.”

Doors open at 4 p.m., with an expo from 4 to 6:15 p.m. and the show running 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at The Democrat, 700 S. Massachusetts Ave, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Cooking School, P.O. Box 848, Sedalia, MO 65301.

According to its Web site, tasteofhome.com, Taste of Home publishes four magazines; sells multiple cookbooks and special-interest recipe collections at retail and grocery stores; and hosts more than 300 local cooking schools around the country each year.

Here is a Taste of Home recipe, provided by Cecelia Wilson of  Rockville, Conn.

Autumn Pork Chop Dinner
2 loin pork chops (1 inch thick)
1 tablespoon canola oil
2 cups shredded cabbage
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
2 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 cup cut fresh or frozen cut green beans
1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons lemon-pepper seasoning
3/4 cup apple juice
1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1 tablespoon butter, melted

In a large skillet, brown chops in oil on both sides; remove and set aside. Toss cabbage with brown sugar and parsley; place in an 11 inch by 7 inch baking dish. Top with potatoes and beans. Arrange chops over vegetables. Sprinkle with lemon-pepper. Pour apple juice over all.

Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until the pork chops and vegetables are tender. Combine the bread crumbs and butter; sprinkle on top. Bake for 15 minutes longer. Yield: 2 servings.
