L. Harvey Patterson, Sherman, Texas

L. Harvey Patterson, 86, of Sherman, Texas, died Thursday, May 1, 2008.

He was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Range Creek community outside of Ethel, Texas, a son of C.J. and Exie Myrtle White Patterson. On July 7, 1946, in Sedalia, he was married to Bertha Irene Walker, who died earlier.

After graduating from Paris High School, he attended North Texas State Teachers College. World War II interrupted his college career and he joined the Navy. He served for 33 months active duty and was assigned to Patrol Craft Sweeper 1405, as a radio man in the South Pacific. While training for the Navy V12 Program at Central Missouri State Teachers College, he met his wife. After the war, they were married and moved to Texas.

He received a bachelor of science degree from North Texas State Teachers College. He was a cabinetmaking instructor and supervisor for the Grayson County Vocational Schools in Sherman. He continued his industrial arts and vocational teaching at Sherman High School, Odessa Permian High School and Garland High School. During this time, he received his master’s degree from Southeastern State College in Durant, Okla. He was an area consultant for vocational education for the Texas Education Agency and retired after more than 42 years of educational service.

He was also a farmer, a rancher and a carpenter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He was a charter member and elder at Ethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he attended since 1925.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Linda Weaver, and her husband, Henry, of Sherman; two sons Chris Jon Patterson, of Bells, Texas, and Dean Ray Patterson, of Denton, Texas; a sister, Exie Joy Bowers, of Littleton, Colo.; seven grandchildren Daniel Lee Weaver, Julie Anna Bridges, Nick Ryan Young, Kristen Diane Patterson, Melody Jo Patterson, Susanna Ray Patterson and Travis Zane Patterson; and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Barnett “Pat” J. Patterson; and a son-in-law, Henry Odell Weaver.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Waldo Funeral Home Chapel in Texas, with the Rev. John Lippert officiating. Pallbearers will be Daniel Lee Weaver, Nick Ryan Young, Kristen Diane Patterson, Melody Jo Patterson, Susanna Ray Patterson and Travis Zane Patterson. Burial will be in Cedarlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Sherman. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
