ROUNDUP: Lady Tigers take second

The Smith-Cotton girls cross country team placed its top five runners in the top 35 Thursday at the Grandview Invitational in Lee’s Summit.

The Lady Tigers placed second in the 12-team event at Longview Community College.

Blue Springs South won with 39 points. S-C finished with 70.

S-C’s Claire Waldo placed fourth in 20 minutes, 35 seconds. Jenny Paul was ninth in 21:41, Elizabeth Ulmer was 11th in 22:35 and Brianna Platt finished in 22:51. Her place was not reported.

“Another great performance,” S-C assistant coach Matt Clark said. “We’re pleased with the consistency of the girls, but we still have things to work on.”

VOLLEYBALL

Smithton 2, Chilhowee 1

The Smithton volleyball team received significant contributions from its junior varsity players Friday night in a 24-26, 25-19, 25-16 victory in Chilhowee.

Smithton coach Lisa Tatum learned when she arrived in Chilhowee that the Lady Indians didn’t have a JV team.

Since she brought her JV team, she decided to let them play against the Chilhowee varsity.

Paige Dowdy had four digs, two kills and three blocks for Smithton, which improved to 3-7.

Kyrsten Keim had four service aces, and Brittany Milsap had seven kills and six service aces.

Tatum commended the defensive play of Kimi Rhoades, Jessica Seeley and Lakayla Steele.

Warsaw 2, El Dorado Springs 0

The Warsaw Wildcats pulled out a tough win on the road Thursday night, beating two-time state champion El Dorado Springs, 25-20, 25-17.

“This was a huge mental victory for us,” Warsaw coach Peggy Switzner said. “...We played with more consistency and fewer mental errors.”

Jessica Cook had eight kills, two service aces and  four digs to lead Warsaw, which improved to 5-7-1.

Taryn Klein added eight kills and two blocks, and Hannah Spry had 14 assists.

El Dorado Springs won the JV match, 25-14, 25-14.

Knob Noster 2, Carrollton 0

The Knob Noster volleyball team notched its 10th win Thursday night, beating Carrollton 25-12, 25-20.

Christina Jones  had seven assists, six kills, four digs and two blocks for Knob Noster.

Kelly Malcolm had seven assists, six digs, one kill and one block for the Panthers.

Autumn Kolkmeier added seven kills, six digs and one block. Britney Murphy had seven digs.

Kyra Williams had six service aces, three digs, two blocks and two kills for the Panthers, who improved to 10-2.

Knob Noster beat Carrollton 25-12, 25-17, in the JV match.

SOFTBALL

Lexington 16, Knob Noster 5

The Lexington Minutewomen scored nine runs in the second inning Thursday en route to a Missouri River Valley Conference East softball victory at Lexington.

Knob Noster grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Minutewomen took control.

Brandi Sahlfeld took the loss, allowing 16 runs — seven earned — on 13 hits with one strikeout and five walks in six innings.

Sahlfeld went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Teammate Victoria Jackson went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Kourtney Cherry scored two runs and drove in two runs. Carrie Binder went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lexington 6, Knob Noster 3

Knob Noster’s Ericka Kjos, Ashley Kjos and Markeisha Fewell secured victories in singles Thursday in Lexington.

Ericka Kjos beat Alexis  Skivers 8-5, Ashley Kjos beat Jenny Carter 8-4 and Fewell beat Leslie Dye 8-4.

In other singles matches, Jordan Heller beat Caitlin McKinney 8-4, Tonya Kopp beat  Brooklynn Wagner  8-6, and Sarah Dinwiddie beat Charlee Byers 8-2.
