Veterans are invited to variety of Nov. 11 activities
Veterans from the Sedalia area are invited to participate in a variety of activities on Nov. 11.
The day will begin with a breakfast, sponsored by the Smith-Cotton JROTC, at 9 a.m. at Smith-Cotton High School. Reservations are needed by Nov. 9 and can by made by calling 851-5317.
A Veterans Day ceremony will follow in the gymnasium. At 11 a.m., the traditional Veterans Day program will begin at the Pettis County Courthouse. The ceremony will be conducted by the 40 & 8, in cooperation with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591, American Legion Posts 16 and 642 and the JROTC.
A free soup and chili lunch will be served after the ceremony at VFW Post 2591, 121 S. Ohio Ave., compliments of the 40 & 8.
The “Parade of Heroes” will begin at 3 p.m. The parade route is slated to begin at Seventh Street and Ohio Avenue, run down Kentucky Avenue to Main Street, then Second Street to Lamine Avenue and end at the courthouse.
Any group wishing to participate in the parade should call Tony Gallagher at 660-287-3812. High school and junior high bands, the JROTC cadets, veteran organizations and various color guards have already signed up.
Each unit must have a patriotic theme.
This parade is non-political and its purpose is to honor those who have served their country and those who are on the home line of defense such as fire and police.
Veterans are invited to walk in the parade or ride in a car, if they are unable to walk.
The public is invited to attend the parade and bring flags to wave.
