Gladys A. Welch, Sedalia

Gladys Augusta Welch, 80, of Sedalia, died Thursday, July 3, 2008, in Independence.


She was born April 27, 1928, in Wildwood, a daughter of Christopher and Mayme Randolph York. On June 2, 1945, in Junction City, Kan., she married Orville D. Welch, who died earlier. 


She graduated from high school in Newburg. She lived most of her life in Jefferson City, where she was responsible for procurements with the U.S. Property and Fiscal Office. She was very meticulous in her personal and professional lives. Her family was the center of her attention and she was the communication center for her extended family. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and spending time with family in Big Piney and Flat. She was active in the Cornerstone Baptist and Bethel Assembly of God churches in Sedalia.   


 Surviving are two sons, Jerry Welch, and his wife, Paula, of Lone Jack, and Leon Welch, and his wife, Nancy, of Sedalia; a brother, Bobby Joe York, of Edgar Springs; six grandchildren, Leon Welch Jr., Robin Ewing, Jason Welch, Jeffrey Welch, Julia Welch and Suzanne Welch; and eight great-grandchildren.


She was also predeceased by three brothers, Herb York, Buck York and Floyd York; and three sisters, Louise Davis, Rose Ann Barnes and Ella Mae Pruitt.


Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home, with Dr. Bracy Hill officiating. Pallbearers will be Kurt Ewing, Robbie York, Larry Pruitt, Leon Welch Jr., Jeffrey Welch, Jason Welch and Randy Welch. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Welch, Paul Rusinko, Chris York and Dwight Welch. Burial will be in Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Monday where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Bethel Assembly of God Church or Cornerstone Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home.
