Seniors ages 60 and older are invited to participate in the Sedalia Senior Center writing contest. The usual categories of rhymed and unrhymed poetry are joined by the categories of limerick, clarihew, senryu and tanka.

The topic for personal essay is “Happy is Contagious.” The theme of the memoir category is a childhood seasonal or holiday memory.

The five short-story categories include choice of story in any genre or topic, story using three of the five words, story using the first line “Where were you last night?,” story written entirely without using words containing the letter “e” and children’s fairy tale topic “the bears decided to stay awake all year.”

A new category offered is mutual theme. This can be two or more stories with a related theme such as western, romance, mystery, inspirational or other. These may be fiction or nonfiction with a total limit of 20 pages.

Typed entries are preferred. Legible handwritten work will be accepted. A complete list of contest rules are available at the Sedalia Public Library, Boonslick Regional Library and Reader’s World.

Entries are due by 2 p.m. April 26 at the Sedalia Senior Center.
