The Missouri Humanities Council has awarded a grant of $5,000 to the Friends of Arrow Rock, Inc. in support of the project “The African-American Experience in Arrow Rock.”

The Friends of Arrow Rock, Inc., established in 1959, safeguards the history, historical artifacts and 13 of the historical structures in the village of Arrow Rock, a National Historic Landmark, through ongoing education programs and preservation initiatives. The grant will offer numerous opportunities and venues for visitors to interact with scholars, experts, living history presenters, storytellers and musicians about the experiences of African Americans throughout the history of Arrow Rock and Missouri.

“We’re so pleased to receive this grant.” said Friends Executive Director Kathy Borgman. “By teaching about important historical events such as the enslavement of African Americans, the Civil War and its aftermath, and the changing fortunes of rural towns like Arrow Rock, we believe we will learn from the past to help build a better future.”
