Smith-Cotton High School students Tristin Baro and Riley Garner advanced to the state speech and debate tournament with their performances Saturday in the district competition held at State Fair Community College.
Baro took first place in Storytelling and second place in Dramatic Interpretation, qualifying for the state tournament in both events. Garner qualified for the state tournament with his first-place finish in Prose.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association state tournament is set for April 20 at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Other members of the Smith-Cotton Talking Tigers competed at SFCC. Kylie Bales (Poetry), Keelly Jones (Humorous Interpretation and Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking) and Amanda Hodges (Original Oratory) each finished sixth in their categories.
