Sedalia Democrat journalists captured five first-place honors and nine awards in total in the Missouri Associated Press Media Editors newspaper awards for work published in 2012.

Sports reporter Eric Ingles won first place in sports features for his piece on Chuck Rodewald, who ran the Chicago Marathon as a tribute to his wife, Chi, who died of brain cancer three days before the race. Former Democrat sports reporter Seth Stringer took top honors in spot sports reporting for his coverage of Smith-Cotton High School’s 35-6 loss to conference foe Helias High. Sports Editor Kyle Smith received third place in spot sports reporting for his story about Washington winning the American Legion AAA state baseball title.

Photographer Sydney Brink’s images finished first and second in sports photography; the winning image captured Tipton running back Dallas Peoples breaking a tackle attempt by a Sacred Heart defender. Brink also won third place in feature photos.

The team of reporter Emily Jarrett, Managing Editor Dennis Rich, Editor Bob Satnan and former reporter Elizabeth Schleicher won first place in the Community Affairs/Public Service category for the “Downtown in Focus” series.

Satnan also finished first in feature writing for his story about Camp GEARS, a young riders education course that was part of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America rally held over the summer in Sedalia. Rich took second in the category with his report on participants in the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms program.

Democrat Publisher Lynn Kidd said: “The number of awards in a variety of categories shows the high level of talent and the commitment to excellence in our newsroom. I’m proud of our news team, and it is nice to see them recognized by fellow journalists for their efforts.”
