Nolen: It’s best to shelter kids from money troubles

Like most Sedalians, as a teenager I worked at the fair for a couple of years. It was the way that some of us earned money for school. I was fortunate enough to work at night when it was cooler. I teamed up with a pair of adults for the sake of safety and so it wasn’t a bad experience. Mostly I remember when the fair was over, waiting excitedly until the day came for the checks to come out, so that I could get downtown and shop.

I don’t remember how much money we made working at the fair, but I’m certain that it wasn’t a lot. But it was enough to buy school supplies and that made me happy. As it was, I probably turned the money over to my mother and she probably gave me enough for a treat. We didn’t discuss finances in my family. That was considered an adult matter. It was the business of children to go to school and get an education
