Nolen: Almost everybody has a story to tell

Posted: Thursday, August 23, 2012 11:21 pm | Updated: 3:56 pm, Tue Aug 28, 2012.

I miss basket dinners. The world was a lot smaller when I was growing up. My family didn’t have a car and so we mostly traveled by train, bus or with our neighbors. My relatives lived in the city and we visited them several times a year by bus or train and I spent most of the summer with my aunt in St. Paul, Minn.

The only times I visited other small towns were on Sundays in the summer when we went to basket dinners. I always liked small towns and little churches. People served lots of food, and they always had homemade ice cream, and the only time we got to see these people were at basket dinners or the state fair.
