Chalfant: Prohibition led police to many raids, arrests

Posted: Tuesday, August 21, 2012 10:01 pm | Updated: 3:58 pm, Tue Aug 28, 2012.

In the mid 19th century, a series of religious revivals swept throughout the country. Protestant denominations such as the Baptist, Methodist, Disciples of Christ and Presbyterian saw increases in their membership as people expressed a desire to be more devout and live more righteous lives.

One of the results of the revival movement was an increased interest in temperance — abstinence from the use of alcoholic beverages. Many employers supported temperance because they were concerned about accidents and time lost from work by employees who drank to excess. Women’s organizations encouraged temperance because they believed alcohol use by a parent would deprive children of necessities such as food, clothing and care. Police departments supported temperance because they feared the violence that accompanied excessive drinking.
