Chalfant: Groups begin battles against demon drinks

Posted: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 6:31 pm

The changes in communication, transportation and work patterns created by the Industrial Revolution altered American society in the 19th century, as did awareness of social problems such as slavery, denial of women’s rights, unenlightened attitudes toward incarceration of criminals, and poor treatment of the mentally ill that had existed since the nation’s beginnings. A variety of reform movements developed to address the problems.

Abolitionist and suffragettes campaigned for the end of slavery and for institution of voting rights for women. Sociologists worked to change prisons and mental health facilities. Educators urged schools to develop curricula that encouraged rural children to stay on the farm or in small towns instead of moving to the large cities, while urban reformers tried to create safer, more beautiful cities.
