Chalfant: News reports include attempt to scam Sedalia bank

Posted: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 5:47 pm

The week of Jan. 19, 1902, as reported in the Sedalia Democrat, was marked by accidents, crime and danger. In Etlah, a Missouri Pacific freight train collided with a passenger train. After the tracks were cleared, Train No. 3 was brought into Sedalia.

Other railroad news recounted injuries suffered by George Goodwin, a brakeman from Sedalia, who fell from a train and wrenched his back severely, and W.F. Murphy, a brakeman on the Mo Pac, who fell and suffered a fracture of the right wrist and the right femur. Both men came to Sedalia to recuperate.
